Rukia Birungi, affectionately known as 'Ghetto Mamma,' recently achieved a milestone that warmed the hearts of her mentors, Nkambo Robert and Aloyo Annet of Mediavision Academy. Rukia, a talented special effects makeup artist and passionate advocate for vulnerable children in the slums, brought her latest award to her mentors, a tangible testament to the impact of their guidance.

This journey of success began in 2022, during a two-week filmmaking training program held at NETSTUDIOS Africa in Bugolobi. The training that was funded by the MASTERCARD Foundation, was a pivotal moment for Rukia. It introduced her to the intricacies of filmmaking principles, ignited her passion for storytelling, and opened her eyes to the power of film as a tool for social change.

Nkambo and Aloyo, recognizing Rukia's potential and dedication, provided invaluable mentorship and support throughout the program. They witnessed her determination to use her artistic skills to shed light on the struggles of children living in poverty and empower them through her foundation, 'Ghetto Mamma.'  This also led to the production of the Documentary ‘Ghetto Mama’

2024, the Uganda Film Festival (UFF) awarded this documentary with Best Documentary award, a film produced by Brenda Onyutta under Netstudios Africa. The documentary is a tribute to Rukia, founder of the 'Ghetto Mama' foundation, highlights the plight of vulnerable children in Uganda and the tireless efforts of Rukia. Netstudios generously donated the production, recognizing Rukia's impact. The film's victory is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling and the commitment of individuals like Rukia, MasterCard and Netstudios.

The recent award, bestowed upon Rukia by the producers of the film 'Ghetto Mamma,' which chronicles her foundation's work, symbolizes the culmination of her hard work and commitment. It's a testament to her belief in the power of film to raise awareness, inspire action, and create a brighter future for marginalized communities, and the unwavering commitment of individuals/institution like Rukia, Netstudios and Mastercard who strive to make a positive impact on the world.

Mediavision Academy, driven by a mission to empower young filmmakers and foster creative talent, is immensely proud of Rukia's achievements. The academy's role in her journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship.

Rukia's future is bright, filled with ambition and a burning desire to produce compelling films that uplift the marginalized and inspire change. As she continues to pursue her filmmaking dreams, Mediavision Academy stands ready to support her, eager to see her vision unfold and witness the positive impact her work will have on the world.
