UNESCO CELEBRATES 60th ANNIVERSARY
Mediavision Academy Cheers The Uganda National Commission for UNESCO Upon Celebrating The 60th Anniversary:
On the 21st of September 2023 marked the peak of 60 years of
the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO (UNATCOM) which was celebrated at the
Speke Resort Munyonyo. The celebrations were based on a theme “Sixty years of advancing ideas that have
shaped Uganda for Peace and sustainable development”.
The event brought together various scholars, stakeholders featured
notable guests, including Chief guest Rt. Hon. Lukiya Nakadama, third Deputy
Prime Minister who represented H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and First
Lady/Minister of Education and Sports, with Hon. Peter Ogwang representing the
Chairperson of UNATCOM. Distinguished figures, such as the Ambassador of Japan
and UNESCO and UNHCR representatives, were also in attendance.
On September 16th, 1963, the Uganda National Commission
for UNESCO was established under the Ministry of Education and Sports after
Uganda’s first Prime Minister declared the country’s intent to become a member
of the United Nations and UNESCO in October 1962.
UNESCO has provided intellectual leadership, influenced policies and
actions in Education, social and human Sciences, Culture and Communication and
Information for peace and sustainable development. It has also addresses emerging social and
ethical challenges as well as fostering cultural diversity, intercultural
dialogue and a culture of peace.
Mediavision Academy as a tertiary film training institute that offers
certificate courses in photography, radio production, video production and film
production is so excited to be part of this ceremony as UNESCO is celebrating
their 60 years of providing services in Uganda. As the academy we
have managed to partner with UNESCO to provide online courses to 200 Ugandans that
promote culture in film through an online training in Filmmaking Fundamentals
for Culture.
“We are extremely happy to be part of this platform contributing to
UNESCO’s vision of promoting Culture in Uganda because the message of preserving
culture needs to be spread countrywide therefore, as an institute we are trying
our best to train the young generation and more filmmakers to document and
produce films that talk about Culture” says Nkambo Robert, Director Mediavision
Academy.

Uganda it being the pearl of Africa with good nature, a beautiful scenery and hospitable people, UNESCO has really played a great role in maintaining the culture, education and behavior through protection and preservation of cultural heritage sites, engaging educational institutes in activities that promote culture, Hon Lukiya Nakadama supplemented.
The celebration of the 60th Anniversary was a public lecture
to the talk about the key achievements of Uganda National Commission for
UNESCO, recognize and award key personalities from different organizations that
have worked together with UNESCO to bring out the five major programs.
